Standard tuning from the thickest to the thinnest string is E, A, D, G, B and E. Start by tuning the low E string to a piano, a tuning fork or another instrument. Press the low E string at the fifth fret; it should sound the same as the open A string. Repeat the fifth-fret comparison for each string, except the G string, which you press at the fourth fret to match the B string. Turn the tuning peg slowly and listen for the wavering beat between two notes. When the beat disappears, the strings are in tune.
